CLAASEN LAUNCHES 23 M CHASE BOAT STARGAZER

Last Thursday, the 23 metre chase boat, called Stargazer, was launched at Claasen Shipyards in the Netherlands. This large classic lined motorboat, intended as a tender for a sailing superyacht, is a unique concept. One of the key tasks of this vessel is to get guests and owner from ashore to the yacht in comfort and to visit shallow diving areas. During this project, the Dutch shipyards Vitters and Claasen combined their efforts to build this motorboat. It is the first time the two sister companies worked together on a new build project.

Stargazer was designed by Hoek Design Naval Architects. Hoek Design was responsible for all naval architecture, structural engineering, exterior and interior design of Stargazer. This is the 27th project on which Claasen and Hoek Design have collaborated. André Hoek, owner of Hoek Design, tells passionately about the design: “It is a timeless and classic design which perfectly fits the style of the mothership. This motorboat differs from all other tenders, which definitely makes it a unique project.”

The concept of the yacht is designed around several purposes the yacht needs to fulfil:

  • To transport guests from shore to mothership.
  • To serve as a diving platform that goes into small lagoons and shallow areas where people can comfortably go in and out of the water using a large swim platform in the stern that forms steps underwater when deployed.
  • To be able to hold extra stores onboard.
  • To accommodate extra crew or guests in the three cabins onboard the yacht.

The owner wanted the boat to have a Pacific range, meaning she is able to be powered by engines underway for 900 miles at cruising speed. The boat was designed with two 912 hp SCANIA engines to drive fixed propellers for a cruising speed of 15 knots and a top speed of 25 knots.

The yacht was built to superyacht standards as far as performance, finish, styling, details and technical installations are concerned. The lightweight aluminium hull was built in the Netherlands and all technical installations and joinery work have been executed by the Dutch shipyards. Project Manager Joris Slecht of Claasen Shipyards is very positive about their partnership with Vitters Shipyard: “This was the first time we built a new yacht together with our sister company Vitters. The co-operation went smoothly and enabled us to successfully finishing this project.”

During the entire process, the owner has been represented by Taco Zwarts from TZ Technical Support. In 2015, Taco relocated to Palma de Mallorca and started TZ Technical Support. He has been assisting many yachts in solving technical issues, organising service work and repairs and managing refits and new builds.

Another recently launched yacht at Claasen Shipyards is the 30.4 m refit sailing yacht Reesle, a Dutch built yacht that was also designed by Hoek Design.
